About Our Society
Our Society
Our Society was formed about a quarter of a century ago by Jim Standish. We have about 50 members, many of whom, but my no means all, are now retired. We have successfully produced several local history books, and the profits from these have kept our subs at an artificially low rate, considering the quality of the speakers that we attract. Annual membership is £10. Non members are very welcome at any of our meetings on payment of £1.50 per visit. We meet on the LAST Wednesday of every month, with our new programme starting in March and running through the summer to October. In May and June we organise outings to places of historic interest. Our annual meal will become a lunch from 2019, with the first being held on 10 July. Meetings commence at 7.30pm in the Parish Hall, Front Street Prudhoe, NE42 5PW.

Books published by the Society
Prudhoe and District Local History Society has produced the following publications:
- The Drumming of the Poss Sticks – a history of Mickley
- A Prudhoe Likeness – a history of Prudhoe
- Prudhoe Reflections – a photographic comparison of Prudhoe Past and Present
A new edition of the Mickley book was published in late 2012, and is still available in local shops, at Society meetings or via the Amazon website.
All of the photographs in these books may be found on the website, but the books contain far more details of our history than can be provided on the website. The website, however, contains many photographs that are not in the current editions of the books.
The books are mainly the work of Mr J. C. Standish, the founder and now Life President of the Society. Mr Standish is a former Headmaster of Mickley School and is a particular expert on the history of Mickley. For the Prudhoe books, he was ably assisted by other members of the Society.
How can you help?
Use of this site is not confined to the Local History Society. It is a resource to be used by all members of the community and all members of the community are invited to contribute to it. Prudhoe and District is a great place in which to live. We who live here are proud of our past, a past which is so well illustrated in the gallery of photographs shown in the galleries on this website.
The collection of photographs, however, is in many ways incomplete. If you:
- have additional photographs that you feel will add value to the site
- know of errors on the site
- have additional information about existing photographs on the site, or
- you claim ownership of a photograph in the galleries and haven’t had that ownership acknowledged
